The labyrinth is an ancient tool that has been found in numerous civilizations throughout the world. While there are many different versions of the labyrinth, this workshop focuses on the Chartres Labyrinth found in Chartres Cathedral, France. This workshop will focus on the 3 stages of the labyrinth. We will begin with the history of the labyrinth from the myth of the Minotaur to the rediscovery of the Chartres labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral, France. We will examine the 3 stages of the labyrinth: detachment, illumination, and unification with special attention given to Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces and the influence that the labyrinth had on Campbell’s teachings. In this workshop we will examine the history, symbolism, messages and mysteries of the Chartres labyrinth. We will identify the three stages of the labyrinth: Purification, Illumination, and Unification - and their relationship to Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces and the art of storytelling. In addition we will we will look at the many ways one can incorporate the labyrinth into their life to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, and to aid in mental, physical and emotional healing. In this workshop we will study the history, meaning and mysteries of the Chartres labyrinth with special emphasis on the rose and its significance in Catholic mysticism. We will revisit the story of Juan Diego, the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the symbolism she represents and how that relates to the labyrinth. In addition we will examine the Rose Window of Chartres Cathedral and its relation to the labyrinth.
